Xiaomi's Mi Mix Alpha has less body, more screen, no buttons and a 108MP camera. As an answer to the Samsungs and Huaweis of the world, Xiaomi unveiled a new concept smartphone, the Mi Mix Alpha, that has taken wraparound displays to the next level. With a claimed screen-to-body ratio of 180%, it will use all the innovative technologies Xiaomi has been teasing since the last six months.
The smartphone is made almost entirely out of titanium alloy, sapphire glass and ceramic.
Powering the Mi Mix Alpha are top-notch specifications, including Qualcomm's top level Snapdragon 855+ chipset paired with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.0 ultra-fast storage.
Xiaomi has also somehow managed to squeeze in a 4,050mAh battery in this sleek design, but that's because it is using a nano silicon cathode powerhouse instead of a traditional Lithium-polymer battery pack. This can be charged via a 40W power adapter.
Xiaomi's CEO Lei Jun at the unveiling of the device in Beijing said "the most difficult part of making a such a smartphone is accommodating the front facing camera. So the Mi Mix Alpha only has a single camera module that can take care of selfies as well as rear facing shots."
The camera module too is no ordinary affair—it comprises a triple camera setup with the much talked about 108MP sensor, developed in collaboration with Samsung, leading the pack. This is accompanied by a 20MP wide-angle sensor and a 12MP telephoto camera.
The smartphone doesn't have any physical buttons. Instead, it has pressure sensitive edges that allow you to lock the phone and change the volume.
The smartphone is still in its concept stage, but it will start selling in limited quantities by the end of December. Lei said Xiaomi so far has invested about 5.8 billion yuan (about ₹57.9 billion) in R&D and is planning to invest 40% more this year.
